Your Library, Your Writing, Your Success: Join Us for Library & Writing Center Week at UCU
Have you ever struggled to find reliable sources for an assignment? Are you unsure about referencing your work, worried about plagiarism, or looking for ways to improve your academic writing? Perhaps you would like to access online books and journals but do not know where to begin.
Library & Writing Center Week at Uganda Christian University (UCU) is the perfect opportunity to find the support you need!
This week, we invite you to visit Hamu Mukasa Library and discover the many services available to support your learning, research and writing.
The library is more than a place to borrow books or find a quiet space to study. It is a partner in your academic journey, offering resources, guidance and services to help you become a more confident and independent learner.
Discover the services available to you
Many students visit the library only when they need a book or a place to read. However, UCU Libraries and Archives offers a range of services that can help you at different stages of your education, from your first assignment to your final dissertation.
During Library & Writing Center Week, take time to learn about these services and how they can make your academic journey easier.
1. Research support: Find the right information
Good academic work begins with good information. Whether you are writing an assignment, preparing a research proposal, conducting a literature review or working on your dissertation, finding reliable information is an important first step.
Our librarians can guide you in searching for scholarly books, journal articles and other academic materials relevant to your topic. You can also learn how to use research databases, organise your references and identify credible sources.
Instead of spending hours searching without finding what you need, visit the library and ask for guidance. We can help you develop better research skills and use your time more effectively.
2. Writing Centre: Improve your academic writing
Do you sometimes find it difficult to organise your ideas, develop a clear argument or express yourself in academic English?
The UCU Writing Centre provides writing support to help students improve their work. You can seek guidance on structuring assignments, developing paragraphs, strengthening arguments, using evidence and improving clarity.
You do not need to wait until you have completed a paper before seeking help. You can bring your assignment instructions, outline, notes or draft and discuss the areas where you need support.
The goal is not simply to correct your work for you. It is to help you understand how to write better and become more confident in expressing your ideas.
3. Turnitin: Learn about plagiarism and academic integrity
Academic integrity is an important part of university life. Every student is expected to present work honestly, acknowledge the ideas of others and reference sources appropriately.
If you are unsure whether you have referenced correctly or whether your work contains passages that need attention, ask about the library's Turnitin-supported checking service.
You can learn what similarity reports mean, how to acknowledge borrowed ideas and how to avoid accidental plagiarism.
Remember, a similarity report is not automatically proof of plagiarism. What matters is understanding the report, reviewing your work and ensuring that your sources are properly acknowledged.
Do not wait until you are submitting your dissertation to learn about proper referencing. Take this opportunity to build good academic habits early.
4. Electronic Library: Access resources online
Did you know that you can access academic resources without always coming to the physical library?
The UCU Electronic Library provides access to e-books, electronic journals and academic databases that support learning and research. These resources can help you find relevant information for your assignments, read scholarly articles and explore subjects beyond your lecture notes.
During Library & Writing Center Week, visit us to learn how to access these resources and navigate the available databases. You can also ask for guidance on accessing electronic resources away from campus.
Make the Electronic Library part of your study routine. It can save you time and help you discover information that you might not find through an ordinary internet search.
Explore the UCU Libraries and Archives website to learn more.
5. English language support for international students
For international students and other multilingual learners, writing academic work in English can sometimes be challenging.
You may understand your subject well but struggle to express your ideas clearly, choose the right academic words or construct sentences confidently. These challenges should not stop you from seeking help.
The UCU Writing Centre offers support to help students strengthen their academic English, improve sentence structure and communicate their ideas more effectively.
If English is not your first language, visit the Writing Centre to learn about the support available to you. You can work towards expressing yourself more clearly in assignments, reports, presentations and other academic writing tasks.
6. Research and publishing support: Take your research further
For students working on research proposals, dissertations and other scholarly projects, the library offers support beyond finding books and articles.
You can seek guidance on literature reviews, reference management, research data analysis and dissertation formatting. Support is also available for tools such as Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote, which help you organise references and prepare citations.
If you are a postgraduate student or an emerging researcher interested in publishing your work, take time to ask about scholarly communication, open-access publishing and the resources available to help you understand the publishing process.
You do not have to figure everything out on your own. Our team can help you identify the appropriate services and resources for your needs.
7. Explore other library services
There is even more to discover at Hamu Mukasa Library. Depending on your needs, you can learn about:
Book borrowing and study spaces to support individual study and group learning.
Document delivery and digitisation to help you access relevant research materials.
Printing, scanning and binding services for your academic documents.
Information literacy training to improve your ability to search for, evaluate and use information responsibly.
Library collections and other resources that support your learning and research.
The best way to discover what is available is to speak to a librarian. Tell us what you are working on, what you need and where you are experiencing difficulties. We will guide you towards the appropriate service.
Why should you participate in Library & Writing Center Week?
With lectures, assignments, group discussions and examinations filling your timetable, you may wonder whether taking time to visit the library is worthwhile.
Here is why it matters.
First, you will discover services you may not know exist. Some students struggle with research or writing simply because they do not know where to find assistance. This week gives you an opportunity to discover the support available to you.
Second, you will learn skills that can improve your academic work. Knowing how to find credible sources, reference correctly and organise your ideas can make a real difference in the quality of your assignments and research.
Third, you will get an opportunity to ask questions. You do not need to have everything figured out before approaching a librarian or writing support staff member. Bring your questions and let us help you find a way forward.
Finally, you will become more independent in your learning. The skills you develop at the library can benefit you throughout your university education and even after graduation.
Our goal is simple: to help you make informed use of the resources and support available at UCU so that you can learn, write and conduct research with greater confidence.
Make your visit count
As you participate in Library & Writing Center Week, think about one or two academic challenges you would like to address.
Perhaps you need help finding journal articles for an assignment. Maybe you want to improve your referencing, understand Turnitin, strengthen your academic English or learn how to access e-books.
Whatever your need, come prepared to learn.
Here are a few simple things you can do during your visit:
Bring an assignment question, research topic or dissertation draft if you need help with a particular task.
Ask about the electronic resources relevant to your course or field of study.
Find out how to access research and writing support before deadlines become urgent.
Speak to the library staff and Writing Centre team about the services that interest you.
Share your suggestions and let us know how the library can better support your academic journey.
You do not have to use every service in one visit. Start with what you need most and explore other services as your studies progress.
We look forward to welcoming you at Hamu Mukasa Library
