A consultation is a focused conversation about a piece of writing. The writer remains the author; the mentor helps the writer see choices, ask sharper questions, and plan a stronger revision.
01
What happens in a session
Most sessions last 30 to 40 minutes. The writer explains the assignment and identifies the main concern. The mentor reads strategically, asks questions, and helps prioritise revision. A good session ends with a clear next step rather than a vague instruction to ‘fix everything’.
02
What to bring
Bring your assignment sheet, grading rubric, draft, outline, sources, supervisor comments, or marked-up previous work. Even if the draft is rough, the session can help you decide what to do next.
03
What mentors can and cannot do
Mentors can help with structure, clarity, argument, evidence, grammar patterns, citation, and revision strategy. They cannot write the paper, guarantee a grade, or silently proofread without involving the writer in the learning process.
Before you come
- Book early.
- Choose one or two priorities.
- Bring instructions.
- Take notes during feedback.
- Revise soon after the session.
