The UCU Writing Centre is not simply a proofreading counter. It is a teaching and coaching space where writers learn how to make stronger choices, revise with purpose, and communicate with confidence across disciplines.

Cross-disciplinary consultations
Students can bring writing from any field, including scientific lab reports, business proposals, engineering data sheets, social science research papers, theological reflections, legal assignments, and education projects. A consultation helps the writer understand the task, organise ideas, strengthen evidence, and improve clarity for the audience.

Graduate and faculty support
Advanced writers may request higher-level feedback on doctoral dissertations, grant proposals, book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and research outputs. The centre supports structure, argument, literature positioning, paragraph flow, scholarly tone, citation integrity, and revision planning.

English as an Additional Language support
EAL support is contextual language coaching for multilingual writers. It focuses on academic idioms, sentence control, advanced syntax, tone, cultural expectations in academic writing, and the writer’s confidence in English as the language of instruction.

Asynchronous e-feedback
When students cannot meet in person, digital drop-box support allows them to upload drafts and receive annotated notes or short screencast-style guidance within 48 hours. Feedback focuses on teachable priorities rather than rewriting the paper for the student.

Writing Across the Curriculum partnerships
The centre works with lecturers to design clearer writing assignments, practical rubrics, revision activities, and discipline-specific writing expectations. This helps writing support move from one office into the full learning experience of a course.

- Do not expect the mentor to write or edit the paper for you.
